Pears

Pears are easy to grow and one of the most reliable and delicious of temperate fruits. The dark green foliage displays brilliant fall colors after a frost. Pears can tolerate heavier, wetter soils than most fruit trees, but avoid planting in waterlogged soils. European pears must be ripened off the tree to achieve the melting, buttery texture, intense flavor, and fragrance that make pears so sumptuous. You can tell if a pear is ripe by lifting it and bending the stem slightly, if it falls off in your hand its ready to pick and store in a cool, dark place for ripening. (Asian pears can be left to ripen on the tree, which will yield a sweeter fruit than those found in the store.) Available on Semi-dwarf OHxF 333 rootstock.
