Persimmons

Persimmons ripen late in the season and store well, providing fresh fruit into the winter season. The non-astringent Fuyu is excellent fresh and both Fuyu and Hachya are prized for cooking and baking. Try drying for a rare treat. The tree is highly ornamental, with large glossy leaves that turn to flaming reds and orange into the fall and fruits that hang on the tree long after the leaves have dropped. The tree is trouble free with few pests, has a low chilling requirement, is self-fruitful, tolerates heavy soils, and needs little pruning once the framework is established. Hachiya trees grow to 30 feet, but can be kept to 15 feet by pruning; Fuyus are naturally semi-dwarf and grow to 8 – 15 feet. Hardy to 0° F, thrives in Sunset Zones 7-9, 11-16, 18-23.
