One day in the mid 1850's Marie Ann Granny Smith returned from the market in Sydney Australia with some empty gin cases that contained a few rotting Tasmanian apples. She threw them in a corner in her yard and thought no more of them. Years later one of the seedlings matured and bore what was to become one of the worlds best-known apples, the Granny Smith. Large, waxy green fruit ripens late in the season, makes great pies and applesauce and fits perfectly in a lunchbox. 500-600 chill hours. USDA zone 6-10; Sunset zones 4-11; 14-16, 18, 32-35.
