Details
A sweet, rich winter pear that is very juicy, the D'anjou originated in France in the early 19th century. Best eaten as a snack or in salads when ripe, they can be used for baking when slightly underripe. They are also very popular for vinegars and pear wine. The D'anjou does not change color when ripe, to test for ripeness, squeeze gently in the area where the stem meets the fruit. A slight give indicates that the fruit is ripe. These pears keep very well in storage and are at their best when ripened off the tree for a few weeks.
